Two QBs Walking Into a Trap — Only One Knows It
Kevin Jennings is playing the best football of his career. Since the Louisville loss on September 19th, he has completed 71.9% of his passes (92-of-128), thrown for 1,073 yards, posted 10 touchdowns against zero interceptions, and carries a 78.9 QBR on the season. Now he gets a Syracuse pass defense that surrenders 30.2 points per game — 102nd nationally — and allows opponents to convert third downs at a 39.19% clip (73rd nationally). SMU ranks 4th nationally in third-down conversion rate. That alignment is not a coincidence; it is a mismatch in every direction. Meanwhile, Steve Angeli steps in having completed just 55.8% of his passes across four starts, with a 123.4 passer rating and five interceptions, facing an SMU defense that surrenders only 179 passing yards per game — 23rd nationally — and generates sacks at a top-12 national rate. Marques White alone has recorded 5.5 sacks in a four-game stretch. With backups Amari Odom (shoulder surgery) and Malachi Nelson (tight-rope surgery) both confirmed out, Syracuse's margin for error at quarterback is nonexistent.
